Katz, who earned his master’s degree in statistics from NC State, has been with The New York Times since 2013, where he writes, designs, and produces articles, charts, and interactive journalism for The Upshot. His work often focuses on visual and interactive storytelling that uncovers patterns within complex datasets, from election returns and subway commutes to neighborhood boundaries and snowfall forecasts.
Reflecting on his craft, Katz notes, “At its heart, statistics is a tool for deriving meaningful information in an uncertain world.” His approach exemplifies the power of data-driven storytelling to shed light on pressing questions, whether explaining trends in drug overdoses, exploring the best Wordle strategies, or quantifying uncertainty in everyday life.
We look forward to welcoming Mr. Katz back to campus as he shares insights from his career at the intersection of statistics, journalism, and public understanding.
