NC State Statistics Club: Semester in Review

This semester, the Statistics Club at NC State has provided an enriching platform for students to engage with the field of statistical sciences and explore its diverse career paths. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, the club has successfully created a vibrant community where members connect, learn, and grow while discovering real-world applications of statistical sciences beyond the classroom.

Their events this semester have featured a wide variety of opportunities for professional and academic development. They hosted a series of inspiring talks and seminars led by distinguished speakers (including NC State alumni) from all around the RTP area, representing companies including RTI, SAS, CISCO and the NIH. These sessions explored topics ranging from cutting-edge research in statistical methodologies to personal career trajectories in the field. Highlights included a session with a senior data scientist working in healthcare analytics, and a panel of alumni who shared insights into the evolving job market for statisticians.

In addition to speaker events, the club introduced hands-on workshops focused on building programming skills and navigating professional networking. Students were able to enhance their proficiency in tools like R and Python while gaining tips for building meaningful connections in the industry.

One highlight of this semester is their focus on practical application of their in-class learning. This can be displayed with research, finding internship opportunities, or competing in state- and nationally-renowned events such as the Carolina Data Challenge or the Triangle Competition in Mathematical Modeling. The Statistics Club is particularly excited to announce two new initiatives: (1) consulting projects with local businesses, giving students hands-on experience solving statistical problems for community partners; and (2) the preparation for the upcoming DataFest hosted by the American Statistical Association. They meet every other Thursday in SAS Hall, Room 5270 and invite all interested students to join them as they continue to expand their activities and provide enriching opportunities.
