Statistics Graduate Student Association (SGSA)

The Statistics Graduate Student Association (SGSA) is an organization created and run by our departmental graduate students. This organization is committed to nurturing a vibrant community, creating meaningful connections and celebrating diverse cultures within our department.

Cultural Celebrations: Moon Festival and Diwali

On September 28, 2023, the Moon Festival brought together over 50 faculty members and students in the Commons, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and cultural exchange over delicious MoonCakes. This event not only provided an opportunity for everyone to catch up but also offered a taste of this significant festival.

On November 9, 2023, Diwali (the Festival of Lights) was celebrated with a potluck lunch that featured an array of homemade Indian delicacies. This event was a delightful showcase of the rich traditions of the festival, prepared by our Indian students from both within and outside the Department of Statistics.

Looking ahead to the Spring 2023 semester, the SGSA is gearing up for two major events:

  • Research Round Robin: This initiative aims to foster connections between students and faculty by providing insights into various research topics. It’s an invaluable opportunity, particularly for new students who are in the process of selecting a research advisor.
  • International Dinner: This event will be a cultural mosaic, featuring performances by students from diverse backgrounds. It is not only a celebration of our department’s cultural richness but also a key recruitment event for incoming PhD students.

Stay tuned for more details on these events. Any events hosted by the SGSA will be posted on the Department calendar.
