Student Spotlight: Undergraduate Students Create Chatbot to Support Mental Health Challenges

In response to the escalating mental health crisis, freshman undergraduate student Sripad Ganti has spearheaded the creation of YUNO (Your Understanding Nurturing Observer). YUNO is a novel chatbot developed by Sripad (founder and president) and his fellow members of the Dreamers & Data Club. He states that this initiative was inspired by research led by our own Dr. Ana-Maria Staicu regarding mental health trends on social media. Developed over recent weeks, YUNO integrates a Deep Learning Model with OpenAI’s API to offer users a multifaceted support system.

YUNO serves as more than just a chatbot; it’s a compassionate companion designed to bridge the gap between individuals and mental health resources. While the YUNO does not replace professional therapy, YUNO provides users with surface-level advice, connections to relevant resources, and moments of relaxation.

On January 31st, 2024, YUNO was soft-launched, signifying the first phase of its development. Accessible via the website, users can engage with the chatbot by clicking on the panda bear icon, inputting their thoughts or questions, and sending them. The creators are eagerly anticipating user feedback to refine YUNO further, with plans to relaunch with updates and a cleaner, more aesthetic look by March 1st. By gathering insights from user interactions, they aim to address any bugs or defects, ensuring YUNO evolves into a more effective tool for mental health support.

Important Disclaimer: While YUNO aims to provide support and guidance, it is crucial to understand that it is not a replacement for professional therapy or counseling. This chatbot is designed to offer surface-level advice and temporary relaxation. However, it lacks the expertise and personalized care provided by trained mental health professionals. Therefore, users should not rely solely on YUNO for addressing complex mental health issues. If you are experiencing severe distress or need personalized assistance, please seek help from a qualified therapist or counselor immediately.
