Honoring Jacqueline Hughes-Oliver: A Legacy of Dedication and Service

After 37.5 years of service, Dr. Jacqueline Hughes-Oliver bids farewell to the Department of Statistics, leaving behind a profound legacy of dedication, expertise, and warmth. In a reflective interview, she shares insights into her journey from graduate student to esteemed faculty member and her plans for the future.

Dr. Hughes-Oliver began her time in the department in August 1986, initially as a graduate student until May 1991. Over the years, she seamlessly transitioned into various roles, including the Director of Graduate Programs from 2007 to 2010. Reflecting on her transition from student to faculty, Dr. Hughes-Oliver acknowledges the support and grace extended by her colleagues, which facilitated a smooth integration into her new role. “It was a bit weird coming back and calling my former professors by their first names,” she recalls, “but everyone was very gracious and receptive.”

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Hughes-Oliver’s work as a statistician evolved dynamically, spanning across diverse research areas and applications. “I’ve worked in many new research areas and many areas of applications,” she remarks, highlighting the versatility inherent in her field. Embracing the ever-changing landscape of statistical inquiry, she found fulfillment in delving into important questions from disparate domains.

As she embarks on the journey of retirement, Dr. Hughes-Oliver looks forward to tending to long-awaited projects at home and nurturing her passions for gardening, crafting, and community service. With plans to spend quality time with her first grandchild and embark on a journey to Kenya and Tanzania, she embraces the prospect of new adventures beyond academia.

When asked about her fondest memories within the department, Dr. Hughes-Oliver finds it challenging to pinpoint a single aspect amidst the myriad of cherished experiences. However, she expresses profound gratitude for the congenial and supportive environment that has characterized the department throughout her tenure. “There are so many things I love about our department,” she reflects, underscoring the sense of community and camaraderie that distinguishes it.

As she bids farewell, Dr. Hughes-Oliver acknowledges the profound impact the department has had on her life, shaping her professional journey and providing a platform for personal growth. “I would not have the great life I have lived without this department. Soooo many people from this department have poured into my life, and for that I’m eternally grateful.” she acknowledges, expressing gratitude for the countless individuals who have enriched her journey.

For aspiring students and new faculty members, Dr. Hughes-Oliver offers sage advice grounded in her decades of experience. “Work hard. Make connections with your colleagues. Ask for help when you need it. Be kind,” she advises, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced life and nurturing meaningful relationships. As one of her final acts as a Professor, Jacqueline Hughes-Oliver delivered a poignant commencement address for our December graduation, imparting wisdom and inspiration to the graduating class.

In her parting words, Dr. Hughes-Oliver expresses optimism for the department’s future, envisioning a continuation of its legacy of excellence and service. With a heart full of gratitude and anticipation for the adventures ahead, she leaves behind a lasting imprint on the Department of Statistics and the countless lives she has touched along the way.
