2024 PhD Prospective Student Visit and International Dinner are a success!

On Friday, March 1, 2024, the department held our annual prospective student visit day and International Dinner. We welcomed accepted domestic PhD students for a visit over two days brimming with exploration and camaraderie. The morning commenced with an array of departmental speakers, including welcoming remarks from Department Head Dr. Kimberly Sellers, and Dr. Wenbin Lu, Director of Statistics Graduate Programs, who provided invaluable insights into the department’s doctoral program.

As the day unfolded, attendees were treated to a series of engaging research presentations by our own professors such as Dr. Jessie Jeng, Dr. Brian Reich, Dr. Nate Josephs, and others. These sessions not only showcased the department’s cutting-edge research but also fostered meaningful dialogue between faculty, current students, and prospective candidates.

Dr. Dave Dickey and Xiaoxia Champon

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the International Dinner & Talent Showcase held on Friday evening. The event was hosted and organized by our Statistics Graduate Student Association (SGSA), particularly PhD students Xiaoxia Champon and Emmett Kendall. Against the backdrop of authentic international cuisine (provided by local vendors) and the vibrant performances of eight talented graduate student groups, the evening resonated with the spirit of cultural celebration and artistic expression. There was even a performance by emeritus faculty member, Dr. Dave Dickey.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who played an instrumental role in making the visit day a resounding success. From the meticulous coordination of Graduate Services Coordinator Isabel Lopez, to the dedication of tour guides and volunteers, each individual’s contribution was impactful towards creating a great experience for our potential students.
