Exciting News: Dr. Emily Griffith Named Associate Department Head

We are delighted to announce that our own Dr. Emily Griffith will be the new Associate Department Head for the department. Dr. Griffith’s appointment is in part due to her long standing dedication and contributions to the department’s academic and research endeavors.

Having earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from NC State University in 2008, Dr. Griffith returned to the department as a faculty member in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Research Professor in 2018. Throughout her time in our department, Dr. Griffith has been an integral part of the department’s fabric, actively shaping statistical education and fostering collaboration within the academic community. As an Associate Professor of the Practice and the Director of Consulting at the Data Science Academy, she has been instrumental in developing best practices for teaching statistical consulting and collaboration.

Dr. Griffith’s leadership extends beyond the university, as evidenced by her active involvement in the North Carolina Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA), where she served as its President in 2019. Her contributions to the broader ASA community, including her role on the Pathways to Promotion Committee and as the District 5 Vice Chair to the Council of Chapters Governing Board, highlight her commitment to advancing statistical methodologies and promoting professional development. For these efforts and her broader contributions to the discipline, Dr. Griffith was recognized as an ASA Fellow in 2023.

Additionally, Dr. Griffith is leading a groundbreaking project recently funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation with the Data Science Academy and the NC State University Libraries. Titled “Models in Data Science Consulting in Higher Education,” the project aims to create a practical manual for working with graduate students to provide effective data science consulting. Dr. Griffith’s leadership underscores her commitment to advancing data science education and collaboration within universities.

As Dr. Griffith assumes her new role as Associate Department Head, we look forward to the continued growth and success of the Department of Statistics under her guidance. Her promotion not only reflects her exemplary achievements but also underscores the department’s commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in statistical education and research. Join us in congratulating Dr. Emily Griffith on this well-deserved appointment.
