Q3-2025 Research Roundup

We continue to proudly highlight the outstanding work of our faculty who have received external funding support. Their dedication and success are a testament to the strength and impact of our academic community. Below lists a snapshot of those endeavors.

Shu Yang

Title: Sensitivity Analysis Methods for Pragmatic Trials with Irregular and Informative Assessment Times

Amount: $330,560

Funding Agency: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)

Period: 11/01/2022-10/31/2025

Abstract: This proposal aims at developing and applying a toolkit for conducting sensitivity analyses of irregular and informative assessment times in pragmatic trials. Dr. Yang will participate in developing theory, methods, and computation tools for conducting sensitivity analyses for data observed at irregular and informative assessment times. Dr. Yang will also participate in the application of the new framework to analyze existing trial data for assessing the effect of asthma control strategies. To make the methodology accessible to a wide research community, we will build R code and write manuscripts to report the results.

Erin Schliep

Title: Zebra Mussel Impacts on Fish Mercury Concentrations

Amount: $20,258

Funding Agency: Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources

Period: 01/01/2024-12/31/2025

Abstract: Dr. Erin Schliep at North Carolina State University is to advise on and assist with the predictive statistical modeling of fish mercury concentration. Erin Schliep will collaborate with colleagues at the University of Minnesota in the model development, validation, and analysis using the joint species distribution model framework, which, in turn, will be used to provide explicit predictions of mercury levels in zebra mussel invaded lakes. Erin Schliep will assist with data analysis and writing of a final report to MAISRC, as well as peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.

Title: Conference: International Workshop on Applied Probability (IWAP 2025)

Amount: $15,000

Funding Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF)

Period: 06/15/2025 – 05/31/2026

Abstract: This project requests funding support to host the 11th International Workshop on Applied Probability (IWAP 2025) on June 9-13, 2025. The IWAP is among the major international conferences in applied probability, providing a forum for disseminating and discussing high-quality research in this field. The meeting’s objective is to facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences, and techniques in applied probability, as well as to offer a platform for advancing new methodologies and computational procedures. To achieve this, IWAP 2025 will bring together researchers and scientists engaged in applied probability, covering methodology and applications from diverse fields, including mathematics, statistics, business, finance, decision processes, physics, computer science, economics, engineering, biology, chemistry, and the social and health sciences. The five-day conference will be hosted by the Statistics Department at NC State University – a nationally and internationally recognized and respected program.

Brian Reich

Title: Geographic Small Area Estimation of Cancer Screening Rates: Precision Approaches to Inform Screening Equity, Outreach, and Interventions

Amount: $74,959

Funding Agency: American Cancer Society

Period: 01/01/2024-12/31/2028
Abstract: Dr Reich will lead the statistical analysis of cancer screening data.  He will assist the team with data preparation, conduct small-area estimation of screening rates using hierarchical Bayesian spatial models and help the team interpret the results.  He will also attend team meetings and contribute to manuscript preparation.
