SGSA Fall 2025 Updates

The summer of 2025 was an exciting and busy one for the Statistics Graduate Student Association (SGSA). The highlight of the season was the launch of the inaugural student-led summer seminar series, affectionately nicknamed the “Summernar.” Designed by students for students, this series provided a welcoming, low-stakes environment where graduate students at every stage of their program could share their research—whether ongoing or completed—with their peers. The format not only provided opportunities for students to practice communicating their research, but it further encouraged curiosity and collaboration, giving attendees the chance to learn from one another and ask questions about the wide range of projects happening within the graduate community.
As the summer drew to a close, attention turned toward the qualifying exam, a milestone that can feel daunting to many. The newest cohort of graduate students rose to the challenge, taking the exam and transitioning into their second year. In keeping with a new tradition, the group marked the occasion by heading out to the dunes immediately after the exam. This outing gave students a chance to unwind, bond, and support one another before the start of the fall semester. A week later, the fun continued with a gathering to recognize the hard work and perseverance of those who had faced the exam.
Service continues to be a major focus of the SGSA. In mid-August, they partnered with Note in the Pocket, a local nonprofit that addresses clothing insecurity for children and families in the Triangle area. Volunteers spent a weekend assisting with the organization’s operations; they quickly learned that, while clothing donations were abundant, the organization had a greater need for helping hands. The experience proved both meaningful and rewarding, and it also set the tone for a full calendar of community service activities that SGSA will continue to pursue throughout the academic year.
Looking ahead, SGSA is eager to carry the momentum of the summer into the fall semester. Intramural sports are already in full swing, with soccer and basketball leagues underway. These leagues are open not only to graduate students but also to faculty, staff, and alumni, making them a fun and inclusive way to connect across the academic community. Plans are also underway for friendly—and possibly competitive—joint events with the Math Graduate Student Association, promising even more opportunities for camaraderie and collaboration in the months to come.
