Annual Department Beach Trip

Friday-Sunday September 9-11, 2022
Atlantic Towers, Carolina Beach, NC

The NCSU Department of Statistics annual beach trip is for Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students, Emeritus Faculty, Alumni, Families and Friends of the Department.

Atlantic Towers has one and two bedroom condominium units all with balconies facing the ocean. Rates may vary. Most of us stay both Friday and Saturday night. Be sure to identify yourself as part of the NCSU Statistics Group. Payment is due in full at the time of your reservation and a minimum 2 night stay is required.

Please make your reservations SOON so that you have a choice of accommodations! They are holding a number of rooms for the department until August 19, 2022.

Food/Beverage Menu

Friday Dinner will be catered by Jackson’s Big Oak Barbeque. There will be pulled pork and fried chicken along with sides: mac & cheese, potato salad, sweet potatoes, and green beans. Beverages include sweet tea, soda, diet soda, flavored sparkling water, lemonade, apple juice, and water. You may bring your own beer/wine to enjoy.

Saturday Brunch will have pre-sliced sub sandwiches (turkey, ham, vegetarian), fruit, chips, and mini muffins. Beverages leftover from the night before will be available, along with coffee, tea, orange juice, and 2% milk.

Saturday Dinner will not be provided by the department. You are expected to make your own arrangements. There are many restaurants nearby and you also have the option to cook in your room if you choose. The Beach Committee will make a dinner reservation for interested faculty/staff on Saturday night at Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar (https://www.oceangrilltiki.com). If you are interested, please email Jonathan Stallrich with the size of your party.

Accommodations

Atlantic Towers has one- and two-bedroom condominium units all with balconies on the ocean. All bedrooms have at least a queen-size bed, and all units have a pull out queen-size sleeper in the living room. Most units have a set of bunk beds in an alcove in the hallway. Thus, most of the one-bedroom units can sleep 6 and the two-bedroom units can sleep 8. The two-bedroom units have two bathrooms. There is some variation in how units are equipped for sleeping, so be sure to confirm the arrangement you want when making reservations.

The room rates per night after taxes are: Rates may vary. For reservations, call 1-800-232-2440 (1-800-BEACH-40) or 1-910-458-8313. Be sure to identify yourself as part of the NCSU Statistics Group. Rooms are requiring full payment at time of reservation. For reservations, call 1-800-232-2440 (1-800-BEACH-40) or 1-910-458-8313. Please make your reservations SOON so that you have a choice of accommodations! They are holding rooms for the department until August 19, 2022.

Towels and linens are provided, but we are asked to bring our own beach towels, paper towels and dish soap. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen including cookware and dinnerware, as well as a microwave oven and coffee pot. The facility has a club room that opens onto the pool deck that we will be able to use (for the all-night bridge game or musicale – Bring your favorite musical instrument!).

Alternative Accommodations

There are a broad array of rental accommodations at Carolina Beach, if preferred.

For those interested in camping, there is a campground at Carolina Beach State Park, just over the bridge as you enter Carolina Beach. The park has 83 camp sites, each with a table and grill. They are available on a first-come-first-served basis and rent for $20 per night.

If you have alternative accommodations, you can get a day pass to park at Atlantic Towers if you go to the front desk with someone who is staying at Atlantic Towers. Otherwise there are public parking options available.

Directions

The most direct route is to follow Interstate I-40 to its end in Wilmington where it becomes NC Route 132. This in turn merges with US Route 421 to Carolina Beach. Go through “downtown” Carolina Beach and curve around a large lake (on your right). About one mile further, just before entering the town of Kure Beach, are three white high-rise buildings on the ocean side. Atlantic Towers is the last of those buildings.

Parking and Transportation

Each reserved room at Atlantic Towers is allowed to park two vehicles on the property. I believe each room is also allowed to give a visitor a day pass. If you do not plan on staying at Atlantic Towers, or just want to visit for the day, please coordinate with someone staying at the complex to get a day pass or expect to find public parking nearby.

Participants are expected to find transportation to the event. Students who need help finding transportation should reach out to Xiaoxia Champon (xzhao17@ncsu.edu).

Help with Coolers and Tables and Chairs

Cold drinks will be served in coolers during the two meals. Anyone that can bring a cooler to help store drinks should reach out to Jonathan Stallrich
We also need some volunteers to help store tables and chairs between Friday evening and Saturday morning. They can be stored in either your vehicle (space permitting) or your room. Please contact Jonathan Stallrich if you can volunteer.
