Alumni Spotlight: Bruce Weir

Bruce Weir earned a Ph.D. in statistics and genetics from NC State in 1968. During his tenure as a faculty member at NC State, he was a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Statistics and Genetics and was founding director of the Bioinformatics Research Center.

75th Anniversary Conference – A Celebration to Remember

The Department of Statistics celebrated its 75th Anniversary during the weekend of October 7-9, 2016. The department was founded by renowned statistician Gertrude Cox in 1941, and the anniversary weekend celebrated its history of excellence in research and teaching.

The New Academic Year

The Department of Statistics began the 2016-17 academic year with its annual ice cream social. Over bowls of Howling Cow ice cream, the department welcomed its newest class of undergraduates, online master of statistics students, graduate students and certificate students.

Fred Wright – $1.2 Million Grant from NHGRI

Fred Wright, Professor of Statistics and Biological Sciences, and Professor Andrew Nobel of UNC have been awarded a new 3-year $1.2 million grant from NHGRI, “Multi-tissue and network models for next-generation eQTL studies.”

Dr. Reich and Dr. Wilson — Materials Science project

A team of researchers from NC State, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and NIST, including Brian Reich and Alyson Wilson, recently published a fundamental advance in materials science that will allow researchers to use advanced statistical techniques to derive more complete information about the crystallographic structure of materials from existing experimental techniques.

Leonard A. Stefanski became Interim Head of the Department of Statistics on July 1, 2016. Dr. Stefanski is a highly respected researcher, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, past Editor of JASA, and co-author of three books.

Farewell Message from Department Head – Dr. Fuentes

It is with mixed emotions that I write to say farewell as head of the Department of Statistics. I will be stepping down effective July 1, 2016, to become dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University.
