Process to Approve Textbook Adoption

Professors at NC State and elsewhere are strongly encouraged to write books that are helpful to students and others. This scholarly activity advances the field and helps disseminate new methods as well as well-established methods. Often an instructor has written a book that is appropriate for a particular class she/he is assigned to teach.

For that book to be adopted as the textbook for a class, it is important that a neutral body assess the appropriateness of the text for the class. In such situations, the Statistics Department at NC State requires that the instructor submit written justification and a copy of the book to the Course and Curriculum Committee for adoption approval. That Committee will decide in a timely manner if the text is appropriate for the class and give their decision to the instructor and to the Department Head.
