Stat-Hub BIOS

Dr. Emily Griffith (she/her) – Co-Director of STAT Hub

As co-Associate Department Head in Statistics, I’m excited about being able to provide a resource to help students have a more positive experience in their statistics classes. Our tutors are smart, enthusiastic, and enjoy helping their fellow students succeed in their coursework.

Dr. Logan Opperman (he/him) – Co-Director of STAT Hub

With nearly a decade of teaching experience under my belt I want to turn around and contribute to the transferring of statistical reasoning and problem solving skills in a more hands on way with STAT Hub. Dr. Griffith and I are creating a supportive learning community and developing effective training programs so that our tutors are trained and confident in their ability to help students build their own confidence in their quantitative skills.

Adam (he/him) – Tutor

I am a senior majoring in Statistics and it is my goal to make statistics less intimidating and more understandable, while helping people develop a deeper appreciation of the subject. I love helping others go from stressed and stuck to confident and curious. My favorite thing about statistics is its applicability to so many different fields. Personally, I am drawn to biostatistics and its use in clinical trials and drug testing. Outside of class, I enjoy listening to music, working out, and spending quality time with my friends!

Jason (he/him) – Tutor

I enjoy tutoring because I like seeing people that I helped succeed in whatever they plan to do in life, even if I’m just a minor role in their story. My favorite part of statistics is how most results help make the unknown things in life a bit more certain, regardless of whether the results are broad or not. Personally, I enjoy Pokemon (competitively, but not in official tournaments) and Survivor, though I highly doubt I’ll get to compete in an actual season!

Paris (she/her) – Tutor

I love helping others discover why math and statistics are so fascinating, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see students gain confidence and succeed in their classes. My favorite area of statistics is probability theory, especially its applications in mathematics and finance. As a double major, I enjoy exploring how two fields work together to model and solve real-world problems. Outside of academics, I like to stay active through weightlifting, running, yoga and ballroom dancing as part of NC State’s club team!

Eli (he/him) – Tutor

I enjoy meeting and working with new people, as well as educating others on subjects that I am passionate about. My favorite part of statistics is how it can be used in sports to improve performance and alter team strategy. Outside the classroom I enjoy watching and playing sports with my friends, as well as hiking and just being outdoors!

Hank (he/him) – Tutor

I enjoy tutoring because I understand how difficult statistics can be and I enjoy helping people navigate those difficult problems. My favorite thing about statistics is how applicable it is to so many different fields. You can really get involved with anything you want to. Personally, I’m really passionate about sports, so I use my statistics skills to work with the NC State baseball team finding ways to leverage data to win more games.

Carl (he/him) – Tutor

Tutoring is my way of giving back to the community here at NC State. I want to help students build genuine mathematical intuition and a deeper understanding of the essence of statistics. My favorite part of statistics is that, in short, statistics is a cheat code for understanding underlying patterns in almost anything. I’ve applied it to areas like algorithmic trading, options modeling and machine learning. Outside of academics, I enjoy working out, playing piano and bass guitar and hitting the gold course!

Mohammed (he/him) – Tutor

Teaching is a fulfilling experience. The teacher is able to see their effort pay off as the student succeeds. It’s also the best test of one’s own understanding. We have amazing teachers in the Statistics department that have helped me develop a passion for statistics and data, and I hope to pass that on! There are many intriguing branches in the science of statistics. The most fun is, however, experimental design. It’s fascinating how constraints like cost-cutting pushes statisticians to make the most of only a little data. Personally, I love soccer and I played for my high school team. The Miller fields on-campus is where I want to live! I also love reading, mostly non-fiction. I spend most of my free-time reading different topics, but sometimes, I enjoy reading stories with real-life elements and drama!
