Stat-Hub Q&A

Q:  What can I get help with at STAT Hub?

A: Tutors can assist with a wide range of topics, such as probability, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing or linear regression, but can also assist with conceptual understanding, homework problems, and even study skills to help you prepare for exams. We also offer limited support for the use of statistical software such as R or SAS.

Q: Is STAT Hub just for students who are struggling?

A: Absolutely not! STAT Hub is a resource for all students. We’re here to help you solidify your understanding, work through challenging problems, and deepen your grasp of the course material.

Q: Do I need an appointment, or can I just walk in?

A:  You are free to just walk in and grab a seat! Of course, a wait is possible, especially in the lead up to typical exam weeks during the semester, but you should receive help quickly!

Q: What should I bring with me to a tutoring session?

A:  To make the most of your session, please come prepared with

  • Your textbook or course materials. Our tutors are trained to help you gain or practice the skills necessary to find the answers you are looking for yourself within your course materials.
  • Specific questions or problems you want to work on. It is much easier to provide you with the dedicated assistance you are looking for if you have already pinpointed the gap in your understanding of the material. However, our tutors are also trained in helping you identify where that gap lies and how to build the bridge to cross it!
  • Any attempted work on homework or practice problems. This will help the tutors gauge where you currently are in the problem solving process, and aids in their ability to pinpoint where, if anywhere, there are holes in your understanding.
  • A list of recent lecture topics. This will help our tutors hone in on what you are being taught at that point of the semester, so that they don’t accidentally use approaches or methodology that you have yet to be exposed to!

Q: How is tutoring different from my professor’s office hours?

A:  While both resources are excellent, they can serve different purposes. Your professor’s office hours are the best place for questions about course logistics, grades or clarification on specific course content. But they can often be crowded if you are looking for assistance on working out practice problems. STAT Hub tutors can work with you on a one-on-one or small group basis to practice and apply concepts, offering a more hands-on peer based learning experience. You are welcome to work in the STAT Hub room, as well, asking for help when you need it.

Q: Can a tutor just give me the answers to my homework?

A: No. Our goal is to help you learn the process, not just get the right answer. We will guide you through the problem-solving steps, help you identify where you went wrong, and ensure you understand the underlying concepts so you can succeed on your own.

Q: How can I get hired as a tutor?

A: We advertise open positions through the Department of Statistics undergraduate listserv. To be qualified for this position, you will need to have taken ST 430, ST 421, and ST 422, and passed all your statistics courses with at least a B. Please keep an eye out for opportunities over the summer (and occasionally late in the fall semester).
